Jodan's Quick Guide to IMWA

Not bragging lah... Not trying to show off lah...

Just that I got quite a few emails asking me for tips.

If you need help with logistics and accommodation, a number of Singaporeans approached this local travel agency for assistance.

Tri Travel - http://www.tritravel.com.au/ironman-wa-main.html

Better still, get together a few kakis and set up the logistics together.
You will probably need a car and a GPS (unless you are a good map reader).
I would recommend Busselton River Resort for accommodation.

Get to Busselton early to acclimatise.
I had never done a wetsuit swim in 21 degree Celcius water and it was a real shocker.
I flew in on Wednesday, thus I took part in all three practice morning swims.
Second day, I felt much better during the swim.
On Saturday, I did a mock run to T1 after the swim. ;)

Did both a 30km bike and 4km run on Thursday and Friday.
The bike ride is definitely important.
It gives you a rough idea with regards to the harsh conditions we are up against.

=============

On race day, just wear what you are most comfortable with.
As SE has re-iterated, 226km is too long a distance...
You need to enjoy the journey.

For me, it was swimming shorts for the swim.
De Soto Triathlon Shorts with it 400-Mile-Pad for the Bike.
Skins Long Compression Tights for the Run.

I spend 22 minutes in T1 and T2, but now I feel that every minute is well worth it. =)

During the bike, I never had the urge to pee.
But I took 2 pee stops nonetheless.
Since you are stopping to stretch that sore butt, might as well do something, right?

If you wanna save some money, train on what they can provide during the race.
PowerBar and Gatorade will save you tons of money.

Nothing will run out during the race.
Food which includes vegemite bread (Vegemite is similar to Brovil) and cookies.
Powerbar Gels and Fruits, ICE and Iced Water, Gatorade and Flat Coke are available even at 9pm at night.
Kudos to the organisers and volunteers.

Race atmosphere is awesome.

We have SuperHeros like Superman, Wonder Woman cheering us on.
Residents will spray you with water using their garden hoses.
Whole families will be out on the Bike and Run Course late into the night just to give you the moral support.

Now onto training.

My training for the Ironman has been lacklustre.
A look at the past postings will tell the story.
But I do believe in one thing.
You need to do a 75% mileage of each discipline to get a feel of the distance.
Life is that cruel.

We can always blame work for the lack of training, but we all know it is just an excuse and I am guilty of it!
Even half an hour of training a day is worth a lot.

As SE always say, training are like deposits in the bank.
It will pay you back in the future with interest. =)

A road bike is sufficient for the Ironman.
Riding on (clip-on) aerobars can assist you in battling the headwinds, but I preferred drop bars at the later part of the race, as the rough roads made riding in aero position pretty uncomfortable.

Take your time to make the U-turn.
No one will hurry you. I have about 4 super fast Ironmen behind me at one turn, but not a single one utter a single word towards the slow triathlete.
Thanks, guys! It really helps a lot...

I packed all my training into the last 6 months.
I had a 3km swim in October and a 2km swim in November.
Century rides once a month is necessary.
BnB 155km in 6.5 hrs helps a lot in making certain that my mental state of mind is good enough to handle the 180km.
20km runs once a month is a bare minimum.
Newton 30k run is a wonderful last long distance run before IMWA. =)
Taking part in races during these 6 months will help aplenty.

Will add more to this post as time goes along, but I guess this should be sufficient for now.
Do come back in the future as I may add more ideas to this post as time passes.

Note :
A lot of Ironmen will not agree to such training tips, but this is what I have gone through.
