Day 273 : 5th March 2011 Musings

Woke up with a running nose.
What a bummer...
Took Piriton and got back to sleep.

Just to sum up my thoughts.

I think 2011 is the Year for Jodan's Ironman.
Work is hell, but I will sort that out.

After 4 years, I think I have sort out everything.
Training will have to start soon, else I will be dead meat.
Someone gotta drag me out for runs and rides...

Ok... I probably have not sort out everything.
My weight is still a huge concern... Haiz...
But then again...

Sessions with YellowFish worked wonders.
I learn to swim better.
Although I do not use free style throughout most of my swim, it has definitely help to conserve my legs for the other disciplines. =)

Now I got to sort out my wetsuit.
Got my eyes on AquaSphere. ;-)
Keke, I think I have a habit of going for the unconventional.
Anyone got a brand and model to recommend? Thanks!

Bike wise, I finally got a saddle which is comfortable enough to put me through the entire Bike distance.

Alize seems like a shrewd move, but I came to realise that it is necessary.
Kudos to all Ironmen who had completed the races in anything else than a carbon bike.

I could not ask for better wheels.

Compact cranks... the cranks that saved my knees...
It may have saved Tour de Bintan for me, had I got it change earlier... =p

Front Hydration, Rear Hydration, Drinking on the move, I got that all fixed.

With K-Edge, I am leaving nothing to chance.
I have seen how precious time is wasted.
This is a small price to pay in races where timing means everything.

Aerobars is something I am still not comfortable with.
I still prefer the safety of the brakes.

CO2 Canisters... Another item I will never get used to. Thank you very much.
Vittoria Pit Stop, Spare Tube and Pump, I will survive.

Running wise, I no longer have knee pains.
Thanks to the running form transformation.
That brings up another point.
Science can only do so much.
Every body is different, so I guess I am lucky to get into my mid-foot stance pretty fast.

I no longer rely on LockLaces.
I prefer normal shoelaces now. =D

My dual sock system should be good enough to see me through another marathon. =)

Haha... I seems to have reveal my entire bag of tricks here. =D
Well, it may not work for all, but it definitely work well for me. =)

Update : The two ladies that I have pinned my hopes on to complete IronMan New Zealand did not make the bike cut-off times.
They were my benchmark to assess my probability on completing IMWA 2011 on a high note.
IMNZ 2011 has not been easy on the competitors this year as it rained the entire race day.
In fact, IMNZ has never been an easy race as rain has forced organisers to cancel the swim leg of the race over the past few years.

Had a chat with a friend about her bike.
In her own words : "my whole body hurts from all the rattling on the road, from my elbow to the whole back! A lady I met at the race expo did warn me abt it but i didn't know it'll be that bad"
(Mister Xxx, once again you may wanna seriously consider changing your bike ;p)

Update 2 : OCBC Cycle 2011 taught me that as long as I change my gears regularly as and when the body feels comfortable, I am good. There is no point holding onto one set of gears for long periods of time and ride till you tire. This can happen even for flat stretches of roads...
OCBC Cycle 2011 has also proved that a saddle can be a man's best friend. =D

*Article from IMNZ Website (http://www.ironman.co.nz/main.cfm?id=121)

Is Ironman more mental or physical?

Right from the start the thing to get your head around is that Ironman is all about your head.
The distances are so far that they stop becoming a physical challenge and start to become a journey.
A mental journey that starts as soon as you decide you would like to find out the answer to that question.
Can you do an Ironman?

The way Ironman can beat you is with self doubt.

To me, it is a mathematical and mental game.

Mathematical, cos you need to work out everything down to the finest details.

Mental, cos as long as your mind is strong, physical is secondary.
Mind Over Body holds water...
